Leica M6 + Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f/1.4 SC
Kodak Gold
ASA 200
24 frames
Processed in C41 @ minilab
Scan: Nikon Coolscan 4000 (ish)
This is the first film exposed with my Leica M6. It was out of date for 6-8 years now, so the results are accordingly. 15 out of 24 because I had some scanning problems and also some of the frames were way underexposed.
.
Today I tried to print some of the photos from above. I converted them to grayscale using Lr, and fiddled with the highlights and shadows to get back some of the detail.
Saved the pictures on a memory stick and went to the minilab. When I get there I tell the employee that I want 20x30cm prints. He tells me that I have to wait 1 day for prints that big. He tried to explain something about the different rolls that they use but I`m not that patient.
So I asked him to print them 13x18cm. He did that while I was looking for something else. 5 minutes later he comes to me with the four pictures and he says something like: “Just so you know, I had to push them 3 stops to get something usable”. I just started laughing … yeah, the “boy you are so wrong!” type of laugh. Payed for them `cause they were cheap and left.
Got home and reproduced them using Lr so what I see on paper, was also what the monitor was showing me.
So here`s the end result. Unhappy customer: NO, `cause I had a good laugh in front of 5 customers. Going there again: hell NO. (Well … unless I want to give them a hard time
)
The one on the left is what I gave them, and the one on the right is what they printed.

Nice.
I like the boke.
This roll was sacrificed exactly for this noble cause – finding out how the 35mm/1.4 renders the Boke.:)
Question: Have you done the scanning process yourself? Maybe a mini-lab?
The guys at MIVA (Romana Square) are getting crappier by the day.
Do you recommend something better?
A friend of mine did the scanning but I didn`t want to take too much of her time and told her to do a standard scan without any other fine tuning.
I wouldn`t scan my films at our mini-labs because they do a crappy job. Furthermore, the chance of getting back a scratched film is pretty high.
Eventually I`ll buy a scanner and do the job myself in my spare time.
Mr. Maican @ Foto Professional (next to Cocor Shopping Center) is using a Nikon 9000ED and I guess he does a good job with it. 4000dpi scans cost around 0,5 RON / frame, so a 36 frames roll will cost you around 18 RON.
I just bought an Epson Perfection V500. I’m very happy with it.
That`s the one I`m looking forward to buy. I was thinking about the V700 but I find it a bit pricey for my immediate needs.
I guess I`ll also end up with the Perfection V500 in about a month, depending on the money I`ll have left when I return from my France/Netherlands trip.
I’m having second thoughts after I bought it. I’m still dreaming about that lens.
If you decide to buy one, let me know… maybe I’ll sell you mine.
