Leica – 4 (Santana @ BestFest – 2nd film)

Fuji Sensia 400
ASA 400
28 out of 38 frames
Processed in E6 @ minilab (Maican)
Scan: Canon CanoScan 4400f

Hello guys and gals... (this one is for George - full color) :D

Today I`m showing you the 2nd film shot at the Santana concert, in Bucharest. Out of the 38 frames I`ll show you 28 `cause the rest of them suck beyond doubt.

This was my first color positive film, a Fuji Sensia 400. Yes, I shot ASA 400 at a concert and it worked. (this reminds me of my Faithless concert 2 years ago when I had to pump up the ISO to 1600 to get something usable)

I really like this film and I bet I`ll get some more after I`m done with the Kodachromes sitting in the fridge.

Enjoy the pictures and don`t forget to come back tomorrow for the 3rd and final part of this concert. I have half of Fuji Superia 1600 just waiting to hit the web.

Leica – 3 (Santana @ Bestfest 2009)

Kodak Portra
ASA 800

Every year we (the photographers) wait for BestFest to open his gates and put on an unforgettable show.  Every year we hope to get photo-passes. Every year someone gets to slam the door in our faces. They give those passes to magazine photographers and even then ... only if your employer is a hot-shot. But I digress. The big idea is that for the past 2 years I`ve reinvented the concept of getting past security with photo gear.

This year I wanted to try something different. They let you in with compact cameras ... but if they see you with a interchangeable lens in your backpack they might not let you in. So a rangefinder should do the trick ... I thought.

Well it did. I had the camera in a handbag and the lens in a friend`s purse, so getting past security was pretty easy.

The concert was fantastic. It rained all day and it stopped just before Carlos Santana got on the stage. My father smiled 2 hours non-stop, and waved his hands along with the crowd ... priceless!

That day at BestFest I used a Rollei Retro 400 (you can see it in action in my Leica -2 blog-post), a Kodak Portra 800 (the one you see in this blog-post) a Fuji Reala 400 and a Fuji Superia 1600. You get to see these last two in a few days.

So, enjoy these 37 frames.

Leica – 2

Rollei Retro 400
ASA 400

Processed in Rodinal 1:100 - 1h stand method
Scan: Canon CanoScan 4400f

It`s been a loooong time since I last wrote a few words. I`ve been doing something special these past 2 months : I took a break!

But now that BB gave me her film scanner I thought I should update the "Leica" chapter. Remember that it`s my second film with a rangefinder and I don`t really know how to scan film, thus the pictures are crappy. But being a part of my  "I`m taking a break" experience, they deserve a spot on my blog.

Enough blabber ...

The first 21 pictures were taken on assignment at a cocktail party. The afternoon started pretty good but the clouds covered Bucharest in no time. (many of you were at Best Fest waiting for the "The Killers" concert). At around 7 PM it started to rain; but I`m not talking about your average summer rain. Oh boy! It got me soaked even under a tent. So we rushed everybody inside ... including the string quartet and all their equipment and tried to continue the event there.

We had a D3, a D200, a D90 and my Leica. Out of those only the Leica didn`t bother with the shutter sound. So we snapped 20-30 pictures with the dSLRs to cover our asses and then enjoyed the rest of the evening snapping few frames on film.

The last frames were snapped on 4th of July before the Santana concert at BestFest.

Enjoy these pictures.

Leica – 1

Leica M6 + Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f/1.4 SC
Kodak Gold
ASA 200
24 frames
Processed in C41 @ minilab
Scan: Nikon Coolscan 4000 (ish)

This is the first film exposed with my Leica M6. It was out of date for 6-8 years now, so the results are accordingly. 15 out of 24 because I had some scanning problems and also some of the frames were way underexposed.

Update (22.jul.2009)

Today I tried to print some of the photos from above. I converted them to grayscale using Lr, and fiddled with the highlights and shadows to get back some of the detail.
Saved the pictures on a memory stick and went to the minilab. When I get there I tell the employee that I want 20x30cm prints. He tells me that I have to wait 1 day for prints that big. He tried to explain something about the different rolls that they use but I`m not that patient.

So I asked him to print them 13x18cm. He did that while I was looking for something else. 5 minutes later he comes to me with the four pictures and he says something like: "Just so you know, I had to push them 3 stops to get something usable". I just started laughing ... yeah, the "boy you are so wrong!" type of laugh. Payed for them `cause they were cheap and left.

Got home and reproduced them using Lr so what I see on paper, was also what the monitor was showing me.

So here`s the end result. Unhappy customer: NO, `cause I had a good laugh in front of 5 customers. Going there again: hell NO. (Well ... unless I want to give them a hard time :) )

The one on the left is what I gave them, and the one on the right is what they printed.

25 x 50 (inchis = 25x25 cm)

My First…
