I get my news using Google Reader as my RSS feed manager. I`ve been doing this for so long I can`t even remember.
Every day, I wake-up, I get out of bed, I open the reader, I sort the feeds (some get sent to the iPhone – via “Read It Later” – some get read) and after that`s done I go pee and wash my teeth. So as you can see, I`m a little addicted of it.
I like information, mainly `cause information is power, and you might never know when you need some.
But I never found Twitter to be a source of good information until I tried it. I always thought that people use it just for “I pooped!” and “I pooped again!” kind of tweets. Boy was I wrong!
(long story…)
So, my best-friend CS said to me one day: “You should tweet!” and I was “what should I tweet about … I hardly update my blog.” And he said: “install Tweet Deck, fiddle with the controls and let me know what you think”. I did just that and noticed I can have a Twitter Panel but also a Facebook Panel. So I had one less tab to open in Firefox. It took me 10min until I realized I want to try this tweeting stuff, mainly because I could FOLLOW the same people that I “follow” using Google Reader. But the main difference is that, with RSS, you get at best one blog-entry/day but on twitter they post more (even if it`s less written content, it`s more information). (see were i`m going with this?)
So I started following Terry White, RC Conception, Corey Barker, Joe McNally, Scott Kelby, Matt Kloskowski and Chase Jarvis (and a few more but this is enough to make a point). All these guys update their blog pretty frequently but the fun stuff is on twitter. The most important part of Twitter is that even if i`m NOT following someone, I can still send them messages by adding “@” in front of their name. (like “@BarakObama Man, you`re tall!”) and they get this because that`s how twitter does stuff. Unfortunately every single person that follows you, sees this message. You could send a DIRECT message to someone but only if that person would happen to be following you.
And that reminds me of Geek and Poke:
(continued further down)
But the main idea is that I can interact with people that I have never dreamed otherwise.
(long story again…)
Adobe launched the Creative Suite 5 and it created a big hype, mostly because it`s the most used graphic suite in the industry (your`s truly included) and it`s one hell of a software pack renewal. The guys I mentioned above get a big part of the blame for my Dark Side transformation because they held live seminars and Q&As the whole week after the launch on KelbyTV (part of Kelby Media) and CreativeLIVE (with the help of Chase Jarvis). And the easiest way to ask questions was via Twitter. Obviously!
That full week has long passed but I still use Twitter to keep an eye on them. You won`t believe how many times I wanted to ask them direct stuff but I backed down thinking they will politely answer and then put me on the “ignored stalkers” list. So 95% of the time I STFW.
Yesterday I read on Terry White`s blog about something really nice. SEAL (the singer) asked him for some advice (out of the blue) … and they don`t know each-other…
(Long story short, SEAL asked Terry to follow him just so he could send Direct messages and then they spoke on the phone and everything seemed like a prank just until the actual phone call)
And that proved once again that this app is really good if it`s used by smart people.
And here comes the big problem:
How to use Twitter and interact with all these fascinating people and not become a stalker?
